The Charity

Save the Rhino International

Save the Rhino International (SRI) is a UK-based conservation charity committed to protecting all five species of rhinos across Africa and Asia. Established in 1994, SRI collaborates with field programs, local communities, and global partners to address the critical threats of poaching and habitat loss.

SRI's multifaceted approach includes:

  • Protecting Rhinos: Enhancing law enforcement and anti-poaching measures by equipping and training ranger teams to safeguard rhino populations.

  • Reducing Illegal Trade: Combating the demand for rhino horn through targeted campaigns aimed at changing consumer behavior and strengthening legal frameworks.

  • Engaging Communities: Empowering local communities with education and sustainable livelihood opportunities, fostering a sense of stewardship over rhino conservation.

  • Bringing Experts Together: Facilitating collaboration among conservationists, researchers, and policymakers to share knowledge and develop effective strategies for rhino preservation.

Through these concerted efforts, Save the Rhino International strives to ensure a future where rhinos thrive in their natural habitats, free from the threats of poaching and environmental degradation.

Save the Rhino Trust

Save the Rhino Trust Namibia (SRT) is dedicated to protecting the world's last free-roaming population of desert-adapted black rhinos in the Kunene region of Namibia. Established in 1982, SRT collaborates closely with local communities, the Namibian government, and various NGOs to monitor and conserve these rhinos across a vast 25,000 km² area. Their efforts have been instrumental in increasing the black rhino population from critically low numbers in the early 1980s to a more stable and growing population today.

A cornerstone of SRT's approach is engaging local communities in conservation efforts. By training and employing community members as trackers and rangers, SRT not only enhances rhino protection but also provides sustainable livelihood opportunities. This community-based strategy has led to 100% of rhinos on community lands in the Kunene region being protected by those who live alongside them.

In response to poaching threats, SRT has intensified its field operations, working in conjunction with government bodies, law enforcement, and other NGOs to bolster rhino security. These collaborative efforts aim to ensure the long-term survival of the species, the preservation of their habitat, and the well-being of local communities.

Through initiatives like sustainable eco-tourism on community lands, SRT continues to provide benefits to local people, reinforcing the value of conservation and fostering a harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
